FACIAL TREATMENTS…AT THE DENTIST?

Why is the dental profession in Ireland being asked to provide facial treatments?

Dentists know the science of the face:

The common perception is that dentists fix teeth, full stop. Whilst this does cover the vast majority of a dentist’s work, their training, both at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, enables them to do a lot more. Dental training involves detailed study of the anatomy and physiology of the head, face, neck and thorax (chest). In college, this part of their training overlaps with medical students. It also involves the study of oral medicine whereby we learn to identify and diagnose lumps, bumps, ulcers, white patches, pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions within the mouth and surrounding tissues. This is a vital part of a dental exam particularly as the incidence of oral cancer is increasing and is now more prevalent than testicular or ovarian cancer.

Dentists know surgical cleanliness:

Dental professionals are also trained in how to maintain rigorous aseptic and sterile working procedures and techniques within our clinics, a factor which is absolutely critical in the provision of any facial or dental treatment.

Dentists know total smile aesthetics:

As dentists our goal is to create wonderful smiles. The appearance of the teeth plays a major role but a beautiful smile involves a lot more than just the teeth. The act of smiling and facial expression involves no less than 23 muscles, 12 to smile and 11 to frown!  Dentists have an intimate knowledge of each of these muscles and in how they act. By using muscle relaxing agents we have the ability to influence their action which in turn can eliminate facial wrinkles. The classical areas we treat are the horizontal frown lines on the forehead, the vertical ‘angry-lines’ between the eyebrows and the crows-feet lines of the eyes. By reducing the muscle activity in these areas we can get the lines to disappear.

The art of beauty is all about symmetry, a beautiful face, smile and teeth will always be perfectly symmetrical (i.e.) one side will be a mirror image of the other. Sometimes facial asymmetry is caused by some of the facial muscles being more active on one side than the other and again by the use of muscle relaxing agents we can eliminate these asymmetries to balance things out.

Another way to address deep wrinkles and asymmetries is the use of dermal fillers. These materials can also be used to define or enhance the lips and we can also recreate the ‘philtrum’ and ‘cupids bow’ of the upper lip which collapses and disappears as we get older. The philtrum is the vertical two lines running down from the septum of the nose to the top lip which create a little trough and the cupids bow is half moon shaped area at the bottom of the philtrum in the midline of the lip. The best example of youth is youth itself and if we look at a baby’s lips they will always have a beautifully defined philtrim and cupids bow.

Dentists know how to deliver pain-free injectionables

The injection of dermal fillers can be uncomfortable and historically unsuccessful attempts have been made to try and numb up the relevant area with creams and topical anaesthetics. As dentists, anaesthesia, or ‘numbing up’, is our expertise. It is a procedure we perform hundreds of time each week. We are able to achieve profound anaesthesia of the lips and surrounding areas. With our knowledge of facial anatomy and our ability to anesthetise, we feel it puts us in an ideal position to be the best clinicians for the painless placement of dermal fillers.

With both undergraduate and post graduate training, dentists have the skill and ability to reduce and eliminate facial wrinkles and asymmetries. They can also define and enhance lips creating a more balanced, youthful and beautiful smile and face.

A number of progressive dental practises have also recruited specialists to offer medicated facial and laser treatments for rosacea and red vein reduction, acne, acne-scarring, and pigment and hair removal. Skin rejuvenation procedures such as micro-dermabrasion and JetPeels are also becoming more popular and are complimentary to the other treatments to create a wonderful youthful smile and face.
