Ever wonder how to prevent tooth decay and keep all your dental caost down. Well Redmond Molloy has the answers.
To prevent tooth decay we need to do 4 simple things everyday.Prevention is not only better than cure it is also less expensive.
Cleaning
Remove the bacteria so it is physically not present to produce the acid which causes tooth decay. We can physically remove it with brushing, flossing, and tooth picks, and this can be supplemented by the chemical removal using an anti-bacterial mouthwash.

Diet.
Don’t give the bacteria what they need to produce the acid (i.e.) the sugar which ultimately causes tooth decay. The very important point regarding sugar is to understand that it is the amount of times in the day you have something sugary, rather than the amount of sugar which does the damage. For example 5 or 6 cups of coffee with only a small amount of sugar spread out over the entire day is far more damaging than sitting down and eating a whole box of chocolates in one go and not having anything sweet for the rest of the day. ‘Little and often’ is bad where tooth decay is concerned.

Fluoride.
Use Fluoride containing tooth pastes and mouthwashes we also have fluoride added to our water in the Ireland; Fluoride has the unique ability to bond onto the surface of the tooth and make it much more resistant to the ‘Acid Attacks’ which cause tooth decay.

Maintance
Ask Redmond Molloy Dentists about preventative treatments such as fluoride application and the placement of fissure sealants which if completed early on childrens teeth ( within two years of eurption idealy) can help prevent tooth decay. Fissure sealants are a painless, cheap treatment, involving no injections or drilling, where the most vulnerable areas of the teeth, the fissures ( biting surface), are sealed up with a resin to prevent the bacteria getting into them and thus preventing tooth decay.
