Tooth whitening and tooth cleaning (‘scale and polishes’) are both remove tooth stains but they work in very different ways. This is because there are two types of tooth stain; stains on the tooth’s surface and stains actually within the structure of the tooth. This internal stain builds up due to the porous nature of the tooth, so teeth naturally get darker as they get older.

‘Scale and Polishes’ can remove the surface stain but it cannot remove the internal stain and has a smaller impact in changing the colour of the tooth to make it whiter. Tooth Whitening systems, however, break down the stain within the tooth and changes the tooth colour to make it whiter. Tooth Whitening is becoming more and more popular (with women and men) and many systems exist, for example the ZOOM whitening technique. However, the tooth whitening process is a sensitive process and should only be administered by a dentist.
Managed properly, Tooth Whitening is a very safe and easy procedure which has no detrimental effect on the teeth; however the procedure can make teeth a little sensitive to cold for 24hrs after the treatment.
